STANDING WAVES
by Sebastiano D'Ayala Valva

American composer Carol Robinson is in Germany to create a thirty-minute piece with the SWR Symphonieorchester in Stuttgart. The piece is co-signed by one of the pioneers of French electronic music, Éliane Radigue, who has been composing for acoustic instruments since 2005.

Now in her nineties, Radigue barely leaves her Paris home, leaving Robinson to work alone with the German orchestra. But she has to face the skepticism of the musicians, who dislike a central aspect of the project: that there are no written scores. The pair’s unorthodox music is expected to materialise during three days of intensive rehearsals, giving the orchestra a creative role it is unaccustomed to. Under the guidance of Robinson and the invisible but powerful aura of Radigue, the piece will find its definitive form at the Donaueschingen Musiktage, the oldest contemporary music festival in the world.
